La Fin de ce Monde et Un Nouveau Millénaire, Op. 7

Symphonic poem for wind ensemble.

Composed in December 2018 and March 2019
Premiered in March 2020

Op. 7 is a symphonic poem composed for my poem La Fin de ce Monde. In both the poem and the music, I portrayed a hypothetical apocalyptic Earth after climate change and natural disasters. The arrangement Op. 07f is arranged for wind ensemble. I conducted Op. 07f at the closing ceremony of my school’s 2020 Global Stewardship Conference in March, which addresses environmental and social awareness.

Like the poem, Op. 7 is a collection of many segments. The piece starts with a gloomy theme in the low voices, symbolizing a deserted Earth. Then the oboe solo pierces through, announcing the dawn, the arrival of the protagonist, and the beginning of the plot. There are contemporary elements such as using bassoons repeatedly tonguing a low note to mimic helicopter sounds. In the middle of the piece, the clarinets start a funeral march in canon, which is inspired by Confutatis Maledictis from Mozart's Requiem. At the end of the piece, the gloomy theme from the introduction returns, played by horns and euphoniums to restore tranquility hinting that no matter what disasters happen, the Earth will always remain there.
